Video: Has a ghost been caught on camera at 'haunted' pub?

Spooked staff at one of Britain's oldest inns spotted the shadowy spectre on CCTV footage.

Spooked staff at one of Britain's oldest pubs believe they have caught a ghost on CCTV.

The freaky footage, which appears to show a shadowy figure flickering into view by the bar, was filmed at Ye Olde Man and Scythe in Bolton.

Manager Tony Dooley spotted the spectre when he checked the cameras on Friday morning and found they had mysteriously stopped recording at 6.18am.

"I came down and saw a glass smashed on the floor so I was instantly suspicious and went to check the CCTV and found it has stopped working," he said.

"We checked the footage and it revealed this figure.

"To be honest I was a bit concerned - I'm a bit of a sceptic when it comes to ghosts but you become more of a believer when you see things like that."

The pub, which dates from 1251, is the fourth-oldest pub in Britain and is reputedly haunted by the Seventh Earl of Derby, James Stanley.

The royalist, whose family originally owned the inn, is said to have spent the last hours of his life there before he was beheaded in 1651 towards the end of the Civil War.

The chair he sat in before he was taken outside and executed is still in the pub today - and some say so is he.

Hundreds of soldiers and civilians were also killed outside the pub in the Bolton Massacre of 1644.

With such a bloody history, it has long been considered a hotspot for paranormal activity and a psychic evening held there in 2006 reportedly found it to be haunted by at least 25 spirits.

Among them is said to be a woman who hung herself in the cellar several centuries ago as well as an eight-year-old girl and a phantom dog.

"There have always been rumours it is haunted and we've had psychic readings done here in the past," said Tony.

"Occasionally you hear things and wonder if it's just the building settling down or whether it's something else.

"It's the fourth-oldest pub in Great Britain so it's had its fair share of deaths and whatnot."

Who You Gonna Call?

Who you gonna call? Ghost hunters called into 'haunted' store after CCTV caught glass spontaneously flying off table of its own accord!

Footage from the Ellacoya Country Store in Gilford shows a glass cake tray top being mysteriously thrown from the table and shattering onto the ground. The Mail Online spoke to an employee at the store who said that those who work there hear strange sounds and whistling with no apparent source.

  • The tenant upstairs hears noises coming from the store after all the employees have gone home
  • The store was once someone's home residence

Don't believe in ghosts? A spooky surveillance video from a store in Gilford, New Hampshire has even sceptics reconsidering their opinion of the supernatural. Footage from the Ellacoya Country Store in Gilford shows a glass cake tray top being mysteriously thrown from the table and shattering on the ground after store employee Heidi Boyd leaves the room.
Upon hearing the noise, Heidi rushes back inside to see what the raucous was and is terrified to discover that a glass object managed to propel itself from the table and into a scattered pile of sharp glass shards.

Surveillance shows employee Bonnie leaving the room for a moment

The glass tray merely rests on the store counter

Suddenly the glass seems to fly off the table as if being propelled by some force

The glass becomes scattered all over the floor after flying mysteriously from the counter top

Store owner Steve Buzzota told WMUR that while objects haven't travelled by themselves before to his knowledge, customers and employees have sensed a ghostly presence and have even 'felt their shoulders being pulled.'

The video was first shared on the Ellacoya Barn & Grille Facebook page which is connected to the store, with the tag line, 'Haunted much?'

The Mail Online called the store to inquire about the event and other ghostly happenings. What employees and neighbours experienced was more chilling tales of the bizarre.
Employee Nicole Brandt was not at the Ellacoya Country Store at the time that they glass shattered but she said that strange sounds occur from time to time with no apparent source.
She said that when she works at the deli counter cutting meat, she hears people entering the room but when she turns around to greet customers no one is there.

Upon hearing glass shatter, Bonnie re-enters the room to look for the source of the sound

Bonnie is shocked to see the glass scattered on the floor with no explanation as to how it fell

A fellow employee enters the store and Bonnie is absolutely horrified by the mysterious happening
She cleans up the mess but the ghostly memory of that day will haunt her forever

'You can't see who's up front,' she said. 'It sounds like someone's there and no one's there.'
She also said that someone could hear whistling sometimes.
She said that the restaurant connected to the house was originally a barn but that the store was once a person's residence. She doesn't know first hand who lived in the home.
The tenant upstairs from the store chimed in and said he heard strange noises.
He said that after the store is closed and everyone has left the vicinity, he starts hearing noises downstairs as if someone were there.
He can hear what sounds like someone or something coming from up the stairs walking down to the seemingly vacated room.

Catholic priest called in to cleanse 'evil' house after widow sees spirit of dead husband appeared on bedroom wall!

  • Andrea Samuels, 41, says shape on her wall is deceased husband Brian
  • She also claims dead boxer Hoob appeared on her ceiling

A terrified widow called for a priest to cleanse her ‘evil’ house after she claims to have seen her dead husband appear on her bedroom wall.
Andrea Samuels said the strange shape on her wall and ceiling is her husband Brian, who died four years ago.
The 41-year-old also claims her dead dog is calling for her beyond the grave in the bathroom of her Carlisle home.

She called for Catholic priest Father Paul Dadson who used holy water to cleanse the property on Wednesday.

Father Dadson, of St Bede’s Catholic Church, confirmed the patches in the bedroom resembled a man and said there was also a figure in the ceiling which resembled part of an animal.

Andrea, who believes the animal in her ceiling is her dead boxer Hoob, said her house has been the scene of numerous inexplicable events.
She claims brand new furniture has broken, pictures have fallen off walls and that she has suffered personal problems since the images first appeared.
Andrea also believes that one of her pet birds, the aptly named 'Spirit', flew away after getting caught up in all the strange happenings. Her second bird, Spook, is now the only one that is left.
Andrea, who was described as being in ‘good psychological and emotional health’ by the priest, said: ‘I used to have a beautiful house and it just went.’
Upon his arrival, Father Dadson scattered holy water around the building, blessed it and said some prayers.

He arrived in Carlisle in January after working as a priest in Botswana and his native Nigeria for 13 years.
He said this is the second time he has had to carry out this kind of spiritual cleansing in the city.
He said: ‘I was there and saw something on the wall which looked to me like some kind of image.
'From a distance it appeared like the figure of a man.
‘In some houses things have been done, maybe people have carried out some kind of sacrifice or other activity that influences people with the forces of evil.’
Andrea, who has lived in her Carlisle home for ten years, now hopes the blessing will help her to move on with her life and says it has helped her discover her religious faith.

Earthbound Spirits

An earthbound spirit is a deceased person’s soul whose energy lingers in the physical world and has not yet crossed over into the spiritual realm. Many reasons have been hypothesized about why these souls do not cross over. Films and television programs tend to popularize the belief that entities who stick around on the physical plane are there to wreak havoc on loved ones, people who have purchased property in which they inhabited or those who have disturbed their resting places. Some of these are fictional accounts and do not represent the whole story.

The common collective research about near-death experiences (NDEs) has been that when one dies and transitions to the spirit world, a bright, loving, light within a tunnel appears and the soul is guided through it and greeted by past loved ones or benevolent entities. Whether or not you believe this, you have most likely heard it. The transition is completed and the soul becomes a part of the spirit world. But how do you really know if a soul has successfully crossed over?

Theories exist that some souls do not transition to the other side in a picture-perfect way. Some researchers and psychic mediums believe that perhaps a soul might encounter obstacles to its transition. These so-called earthbound spirits may have something holding them back that will not allow them to rest in peace. Listed below are some possible explanations as to why a spirit might remain stuck in the physical realm.

Confusion — A person who experienced a bewildering, traumatic, sudden death by way of a car accident, act of war, murder, plane crash, or other unexpected means, might not cross over immediately because he/she does not comprehend his/her own death. It may take a long while for the perplexed individual to accept what has happened and to allow the transition to the spirit world.

Unfinished Business — Earthbound spirits may not want to cross over because they were unable to complete an important project prior to their death and they are fixated on seeing it through; they may want to make sure that their loved ones rightfully benefit from the inheritance due to them; they might feel they have to relay one final important message to someone; or they have a specific goal that they were robbed of completing while they were still alive.

Fear of the Unknown — People who had specific religious beliefs when they were alive might still harbor those beliefs as an earthbound spirit. They may actually fear the act of crossing over. They might be guilt-laden because of their earthly deeds and fear being judged too harshly. The fear of crossing over may also stem from the fear of encountering souls in the spirit world who have wronged them or encountering those souls who they had wronged in the physical world. There might also exist the fear that if they cross over their energy will not continue on.

Guilt — An earthbound spirit who has commit suicide or whose behavior contributed to the death (e.g., addiction problems) may experience overwhelming guilt at abruptly leaving behind loved ones — leaving them to fend for themselves and to dig their way out of possible financial debt or legal troubles.

Right a Wrong — Especially in the case of an individual has been murdered, the soul will make every effort to stay in the physical realm to reveal clues surrounding the mystery of his/her death, in the hopes that those who were involved will be brought to justice. A spirit might also be compelled to delay crossing over in order to help a loved one or friend uncover the truth or warn about a situation or an individual who has been unfaithful or whose motives have been unscrupulous in some way.

Loved Ones not Letting Go — Earthbound spirits are often kept from crossing over because the loved ones they have left behind have not been able to move forward or let go and accept the death. The living individuals have not learned to live without the deceased. The spirit becomes tied to those feelings, which overrides their ability to move on to the spirit world. The spirits become stuck and chained down to the physical realm.

In conclusion, at times, the spirits as well as the living need help to make the necessary transitions after death. Psychic mediums and those who are extremely sensitive to spirits have been quite successful in assisting and persuading these earthbound spirits to cross over. They have also been able to uncover the various reasons that may have been holding the spirits back from doing so. They have been able to ally their fears and enticed them to a better place and out of a state of limbo. This process does not always happen immediately. It may take quite some time and patience to achieve the desired outcome for all.

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall...

From fairy tales to real life, mirrors, reflective surfaces, and still water all have something in common. They can be used for divination, magic, stealing souls and repelling evil. The first reflective surface used for divination was a body of still water. Mirrors are a basic tool for magical work (Greer, 310). The Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks made their mirrors from bronze or silver. The Chinese and Hindu also used metals. It wasn’t until the 13th century in Venice that glass mirrors were introduced (Guiley, 372).

In tribal societies it is the belief that ones reflection is actually ones soul. And by exposing ones soul it is made vulnerable to evil influences and even death. It is believed that mirrors are tools in which souls may be stolen for evil purposes. Mirrors have been used as tools to increase clairvoyance and/or to gain knowledge of past lives. All class levels have used mirrors to tell their futures. From the middles ages to the 19th century, mirrors have been used by everyone including Catherine de Medici and Henry IV (Guiley, 372).

It’s not only mirrors that have created concern for people’s souls. The Motumotu of New Guinea believed their reflections were their souls the first time they saw their likenesses in a looking glass. The Basutos believe that the crocodiles have the power of killing a man by dragging his reflection under the water. Saddle Island residents in Melanesia believe there is a pool in which a malignant spirit lives. When someone’s reflection is seen in the water, it is feared that they will die and the spirit will do evil with his soul. The Greeks regarded seeing ones reflection in the water as a death omen for they feared the water spirits would capture the person’s reflection (soul) and drag it into the depths of the water thus leaving the person soulless (Bartleby.com)

Mirrors are often associated with evil, either as a means to repel evil or as a way to further evil growth in the world. Mirrors are thought to be portals into another dimension or world allowing evil, spirits, etc. to wreak havoc on the world. Superstitions about mirrors are many. For example, if one breaks a mirror one can expect at least seven years of bad luck, disaster or death. If the mirror falls on its own, then it is believed that death is coming for someone in the house. If a dead person is in a house with mirrors, their soul could be trapped forever in the mirror unless the mirror is covered (. And if one looks into the mirror on the night of a full moon, repeats “Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary” then evil is let loose upon you with no mercy!

If it is true that one sees their soul in the reflection of a mirror, then that must be why vampires can not be seen in them. Vampires have no soul. We also have it on good authority that vampires do not have reflections. After all, it was Bram Stoker’s Renfield who noticed the lack of mirrors in castle Dracula (Melton, 170)! Taking Stoker’s lead in vampires, Hollywood has reinforced this belief.

It has been a belief that mirrors can be used to protect one from vampires and witches. In Europe it became fashionable for one to wear small looking glasses on ones hat. This was done to repel the evil eye and protect the wearer from evil (Guiley, 373).

For paranormal investigators mirrors or other reflective surfaces wreak havoc. When taking photographs (35 mm or digital) especially whenever there is a flash involved, the reflection of light can create images that are not really present. One example of this occurred when taking a photo of some clothes hanging from a metal rod located in front of a mirror. The clothing and the reflection gave an illusion of a nose within the clothes as if someone was peaking out. Mirrors draped with lace or near hanging lace can also present the illusion that someone is present within the folds and design on the lace. The same can be said of still bodies of water. Water in a pond or the bottom of a bowl will also create illusions which I am sure helped to fuel these beliefs.
